You can make a lasting difference in the lives of 6 families in Mexico by joining Calgary West and Fish Creek Rotary Clubs as we embark on our annual Homes of Hope build.
The families are among the poorest in the region, averaging monthly salaries of less than $200 US per month when there is work available. A number of the primary wage earners are quite often unemployed when we arrive. Typical living conditions of the families are homes built on dirt floors, using scrap material as siding and very rudimentary roofing including some with tarp roofs.
The Homes that we build are wood framed/clad, with concrete floors, 3 windows, a secure door, and tar shingled roofing. The homes are wired and have painted drywall interiors that include 2 bedrooms with an open living area. In addition, the families are provided with a furniture package that includes beds, table and chair, propane stove, and drapes.
The real benefit to the families is having a safe and healthy environment, off the dirt floors, that is secure and dry. The families overall health improves, the children begin to excel at school, and the parents can focus on providing the necessities of life without worrying about shelter.
We find that for those participants that allow themselves to live in the moment, and experience the families, their lives are changed as well. Our “Casa de Esperanza Famila” continues to grow every year. To participate you must get yourself to San Diego on March 2nd and contribute $385 US for your Room Board and transportation while in Mexico. We will commit to having you back at the San Diego Airport by 10am on Sunday March 5th…That’s right, 6 Homes in 4 Days …..

Calgary West Rotary Club was the proud recipient of the Harris Trophy awarded to the top fundraising Club in the Indoor Ride to End Polio in 2015. The Trophy is proudly on display in Evanston.
Not a Club to rest on their laurels Calgary West will once again host the Ride to End Polio on November 12th, 2016. The ride is to raise funds in support of Rotary International’s global quest to eradicate polio in the world. Rotary International and its partners in the polio eradication effort have cooperated to reduce the number of polio cases by more than 99% (from 350,000 cases per year in the 1980s to less than 60 cases this year). Today only three countries have endemic polio: Pakistan and Afghanistan, and recently Nigeria had a
reoccurrence.
There are a few ways to help. The first would be to participate in our Ride on Saturday, November 12th at 4 PM. The Ride will be hosted by the HotShop Silverado location. It is a 1 hour Spin Class ride, that promises to be high-energy and will be led by a Satellite Member Sarah-Lana Moore. You can also arrange your own Ride in concert with our Ride, and arrange to solicit Sponsors as you Ride to End Polio from wherever you are. For more information please contact Dan Doherty at dohertyd@telus.net.
More importantly, you can donate by sponsoring our Ride.
Through the "End Polio Now: Make History Today" campaign, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation will match two-to-one every dollar Rotary commits to polio eradication. If you would like to help, please consider a contribution of any amount from $5 to $100 or more, and watch your contribution grow. If you are a Rotarian you can make your contribution online through My Rotary at www.rotary.org. Please designate your contribution for Polio Plus and let me know the amount. If you are not a Rotarian, or if you prefer to pay by cheque, please make a cheque payable to The Rotary Foundation.
We are very close to our goal of total Polio eradication, and a final push is needed. Your contribution will make a difference and we truly appreciate your support. All Contributions over $20.00 are Tax Deductible. Please return your forms and Pledges by Nov. 20th.
