Indigenous Committee - Call to Action
The District has had an Indigenous Committee functioning in the District for over a year. This Committee has moved forward with plans to engage our Rotarians with our Indigenous communities.

The recent news announcements about the missing children discovered at the Kamloops Residential School has hit the heart of each of us. We have had some of you great Rotarians reach out to help with donations or other efforts. As a leadership group, we want to support the initiatives of our Indigenous Committee, whose focus will create opportunities for Rotary Clubs and Indigenous community organizations to identify issues in the community, research the issues, brainstorm solutions, develop a plan, and take action.

Rotarians and Indigenous leaders will learn about each other and co-create initiatives that benefit Indigenous peoples in the District. This Committee will run long-term and be sustainable. We already have clubs within our District, such as Cochrane and Raymond, that have made great relationships with their local Indigenous groups.

The Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls for Action recommended all Canadians, individually and or corporately, undertake the necessary steps in favour of reconciliation with Indigenous people. This Committee and its projects will be an essential step for District 5360, its clubs, and members to make meaningful change for all people in our Indigenous areas.

If you are so moved, contributions to the District Indigenous Committee and its initiatives are accepted. Click to Contribute

Your club and individual members can reach out to the District https://rotary5360.ca/DistrictOrganizationChart/2021 if you want to become more involved in this tremendous relationship-building effort with our good neighbours.

TIME
India Coronavirus Rotary Oxygen Initiative
Districts and clubs in Zone 28 and 32 are joining together for an initiative to establish ROTARY OXYGEN BANKS.
‘The Bank would loan an Oxygen Concentrator to a patient in need, with the provision that after the immediate crisis is over, the concerned person would return the concentrator to the Oxygen Bank. Such a bank would be of help to a large number of people over a period of time.

Hopefully, this devastating wave of the COVID pandemic would abate in a while. After that, the Oxygen Bank would be of immense value for any subsequent wave and would be a sensible fallback option. The Oxygen Bank would also be of immense value to economically disadvantaged individuals suffering from ILD (Interstetial Lung Disease) or other Chest ailments that require Oxygenation for the patient’. After consultation with the Chair of the India Rotary COVID Task Force the most urgent need is for portable Oxygen Concentrators. These units are portable and will save many lives in the coming weeks and months.

The price of each concentrator is approx. US$1000 including shipping, distribution and other logistical costs. The need is immediate and critical.

Charitable receipts will be issued on request for donations for any amount over $50.00 for Rotarians and $100.00 for community member donors.
We encourage clubs to reach out to community organizations and members who are moved by this human tragedy and want to help. Community donations could be matched by club and member donations where available.

Cheques are to be made out to ROTARY CLUB OF ESSEX FOUNDATION. Please reach out to me regarding details for remittance and charitable receipts.

Rotary Action Group Family Safety Discussion

Rotary Action Group Family Safety will end the cycle of family violence. This video had 4 Rotarians (2 from Australia and 2 from Canada) discussing how. Stopping violence and preventing Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACES) is possible. This video explores the approaches/ideas that Rotary Action group on Family Safety has in mind to make this happen.

Four Aces is great when you are playing poker…. But definitely not when it comes to being healthy, hopeful, helping and maybe even happy. ACES, Adverse Childhood Experiences, if unresolved, lead to a whole lot of unnecessary pain and challenge. We can make life easier for kiddos today…. Easier to learn, easier to have friends and relationships, better health, better satisfaction with life. We can make life easier and more enjoyable for these children as they become adults and throughout their adult lives.

Collectively, we all benefit when we have more of our community members living their best lives.
